If you have the time and energy it is always better to make something from scratch. But sometimes it isn't that easy, working a full-time job and having a social life will make even the biggest foodie hardos go for something fast & easy. Easy doesn't have to come out of a can or microwaved from a plastic tray, and there are quick cook-time options allow a certain amount of customization. More and more dried prepackaged meals are cramming the the grocery store shelves, but the original will always be blue box mac & cheese. When the world was introduced to shells & white cheddar mac and cheese, the boxed mac and cheese industry fought for recipe supremacy.
8. Pasta Roni: Shells & White Cheddar
This was the only 'no drain' pasta, which took slightly longer to cook and required more milk. I felt like I should have been cooking this over a hot plate next to a batch of methamphetamine with a cigarette hanging out of my mouth in my trailer home. Pasta Roni would be more suitable patching drywall than consuming, I do not recommend buying this.
7. Annie's: Rice Shells & Creamy White Cheddar
If you closed your eyes and removed your teeth you might think this tastes like OG Annie's. I wouldn't wish a gluten-free diet on my worst enemy.
6. Horizon: Classic Mac
Unfortunately the sauce was thin and a hint of cheese couldn't be found. Dear Horizon, please add back the GMO's and non-organic ingredients to make this taste better.
4(Tie). Pirate's Booty: Shells & Aged White Cheddar
As a fan of Pirate's Booty cheese curls puffs I was really pushing for this to be my favorite brand. The DuPont chemicals that were used to replicate cheese were slightly off-putting but I can't say I hated it.
4(Tie). Back to Nature: Shells & White Cheddar
Re-branded Pirate's Booty was slightly better but I couldn't tell the difference, tie goes to the runner.
3. 365: Shells & Cheese
[Insert whole paycheck joke here] Silky sauce that has a mild cheddar taste but something about this made it less appetizing than the top two mac & cheeses.
2. Annie's: Organic Shells & White Cheddar
The only downside is this dries out faster than most of the recipes, add a little more milk than advertised to achieve maximum results.
1. Annie's: Shells & White Cheddar
I didn't want to admit it but the original white cheddar mac can't be replicated. Annie you are bae, sorry Guy.
